Social Justice is rarely associated with business, large or small. We tend to think of doing good in the world and making money as mutually exclusive. I challenge this assumption by proposing that network marketing businesses are perfectly positioned to advance social justice and close income gaps between classes.

If you've come within a couple of miles of your clients during the past few months, you've probably been asked, "How can we use this social networking stuff?" And for good reason. Social networking has been hot stuff for a while now, and it seems like a no-brainer when it comes to advertising. After all, you've got millions of people who have self-identified with what they're interested in, who post loads of personal information about themselves, and (probably most important) who actually make connections between themselves and people like them. An advertiser's dream, right?

In past years, I have watched as the Internet has gone through different levels of acceptance in the MLM industry. The first level was skepticism and ridicule. The Internet was dismissed as a passing fad. The second level was blind acceptance and a rush to get onboard before the train left the station. Everybody wanted to have a personal Web page even if they didn't know how they could use it in their business. The third level, which we are at now, is to understand the importance of the Internet and make sure we are getting value for the money we invest.

As I tried to make sense of an overloaded inbox on my mobile device's screen while on the train for my daily commute, I had a bit of an epiphany. When I finally stopped scrolling and clicking, I noticed my fellow commuters were either in varied states of sleeplessness or intently surveying their choice of reading material, ranging from daily newspapers to the latest Harry Potter novel. Unlike me, a marketer who spends the majority of her time navigating the emerging mobile marketplace, they weren't struggling with how to type with two hands while trying to not lose their balance. Suddenly, it dawned on me: I'm in the minority. This realization applies to all of us who live and breathe mobile daily. Quite frankly, we're not "normal."

Network marketing - also called multilevel marketing (MLM), person-to-person marketing, and one-on-one marketing - is a form of direct selling. You already know what direct selling is. Avon, Tupperware, Mary Kay, Fuller Brush ... these are just some of the direct selling companies that have been household names for decades.

For those unaware, the pop-under ad is the window a Web site strategically places under its main browser window. When you close the browser, the site has one more chance to interact with you. Pop-under windows are incredibly annoying and usually have no merit whatsoever. The site's brand feels like a houseguest who overstays her welcome.

"Starting a conversation with anyone about Network Marketing is so easy, but yet we seem to make it difficult. We seem to hesitate and wonder what to say or do, and we often miss the chance to talk about our business to people who truly would be open to moving their life into a larger place.
Why does this happen?
Many times, it is a fear because of a lack of knowledge, or experience approaching people. Talking to people about your business starts with talking to people about anything but your business. Talk about their business and employment. Be interested in THEM, not you. And approaching people with a GREAT INTENTION is the secret."

The most authentic and, dare I say, personally evolved people on the planet are children.
When we were children anything was not only possible, but expected. Anything we wanted we believed we could have - and have now. Anything we wanted to do we believed we could do right now, without any interference or negotiating. The world was our oyster. It could be no other way - not because we were insecure, selfish clods, but because our very existence made the world our candy store, in which we had unlimited credit.

If there's one thing that is coming ever so clearer to me about MLM regarding a factor dictating a persons success (or not), it's about a person's habits in life.
What kind of habits that person has about M.L.M. will literally define the level of success they have.

Network Marketing rightly managed, and treated as a mentoring business and not as a sales business, would make success the most probable outcome. Network marketing is not about instant or short term success. It is rather about hard work for a couple of years and residual income for many continuous years after that point.

One of the most fascinating changes is happening around us. The way we search for information has had a staggering impact on the way we shop. But why is this so interesting? Simple. The changes that are happening, are happening so fast that most of us aren't even noticing.
Quite uncannily, in 1996, a man named Robert Poe predicted this revolution in his best seller book "Wave 3: The New Era in Network Marketing". (This book is available for about 1 cent on Amazon, if you're interested!)
He stated, quite confidently, that technology - and the internet in particular - would change the way many of us shop and earn our livings through the convergence of buying and selling patterns. Specifically, that it would be possible for marketers to earn commissions by referring sales and for consumers to gain discounts as members, or affiliates if you prefer, of this new breed of cutting edge company.

Being A Mentor With A Servant's Heart
Have you ever thought about how many different people you have influenced in your life? How many people will you influence today, tomorrow, next week, or even next year? Today I was asked that question. I had to stop and think about what my answer would be. But, even more important - how did I influence those people? Was my influence positive or negative? Was I able to help them in some way to solve a problem, to understand a situation, or even to take a step forward in becoming a more positive or successful person?

I recall my grandpa when I was a child putting a fine point on this issue, which was hard for his 8 year old grandson to understand back then. As children often do I was in a hurry to get places, fell down and skinned my knee in the process. Grandpa Walker glanced over at me with his wicked smile and said, "Want me to step on your toe so your knee will feel better?" Obviously not the most loving of statements a grandfather might say to his grandchild, however, there was no doubt that grandpa loved me. He just had a special way of showing it. Upon his passing the phrase, "Diamond in the rough" was etched on his marker.

Leverage of the first step
The first step is to decide what kind of a world you want to live in. Do you want to live in the world of the poor, middle class, or the rich? Most people only dream of living in the world of the rich but they do not take that first step and that is to decide. Once you've decided, there is no coming back. The moment you decide, everything in your world will change.

MLM has been called "Relationship Marketing". Yet, rarely do I see people developing relationships at the same time they are marketing. They market... and then they build relationships. The key to effective follow-up is putting Relationships... back into marketing. We are after all talking to real people, with real hopes and real desires.

It's incredibly hard to think of new paradigms in network marketing when you only hear the accepted perspective on how to "do" it from old school upline, trainers and corporate types. These are people who promote a 50 year-old pardigm of recruit recruit recruit that has 1) resulted in a 95% drop out rate, and 2) has given us an image among many that's on a par with having leprosy or aids.
In today's market place, old school network marketing has become a poison paradigm.

One of the more pronounced problems seen around the country these days is the problem of low self-esteem. Sure, almost everyone has acquired the ability to "mask" that feeling from friends, family, co-workers, even sometimes their spouse, but deep down, they still feel low self-esteem. They feel like they should be doing more, but they don't believe they have the ability to change their "life circumstances".

Before you even think of starting your home business, and thinking you'll be an overnight success without any or little effort, there is no such thing. It takes a lot of work.
On the other hand, there are two types of home businesses. The type that can be compared to a brick and mortar regular business, but doing it from home. The only advantage to this, is you've gotten rid of most of the overhead expenses. But the best type of home business is of course the internet home business, because you're not limited to one specific location. The world is your window, and that window is open 24/7 even as you sleep.

Today's message is on a topic I rarely see discussed online, that being how to apply direct marketing principles to your network marketing business. To be fair, network marketing itself, does in fact follow a direct marketing model, but not in the most efficient way. It's understandable why, in many highly successful direct marketing businesses the phone is a key component to creating results, but you don't see the owner of the organization on the phone themselves, rather they hire a phone room to do the dirty work.
When done properly it can be highly effective, but when done improperly it can alienate your customers and give them a bad impression of you and your business.

So anything I write here beyond what you can see on the Surface Web site is speculation.

In an ABC 20/20 segment (See "Sugar Pill Treats Cancer?") Mannatech is in the news again.
Posted by Kim Klaver: I have removed the original post, because it was probably not productive criticism on my part.
Here's what might be more productive:
How do we answer trick questions by the media so we don't get into trouble with the regulators, and yet stay true to our beliefs?
Here's the question ABC posed in the segment above: Does your product cure cancer?
(We can as easily make the question: Does it reduce weight? Does it grow back hair?)
It's about promises - promises about the future, isn't it?
OK. Now picture this interview...
NEWS PERSON (or customer): Does your product cure cancer?
CEO/you/Rep: I don't know if it does or not
NEWS PERSON (pressing): Well does it or doesn't it?!
CEO/you/Rep: I don't know. We do not claim or promise that it does that [whatever, cure cancer, lose weight, etc.]. So the answer is, I don't know if it does cure cancer or not.
NEWS PERSON (pressing more): Well there are your reps saying they were cured of cancer with your product. Were they?
CEO/you/Rep: I don't know for sure. It may have been a placebo effect. 30% of medical cures are reported to be from the placebo effect. It may have been that. I don't know. We make no claims or promises about what the product will do for people, that's what I DO know.
You're not denying what you may have seen or the stories of others (or your own). And yet you are making NO CLAIMS or promises about what might happen for anyone else.
This reflects the New School approach. No need to deny what you believe you've seen or experienced. Yet, make no promises.
Think?

Have you ever dreamed of working at home? An increasingly popular choice of home based business is network marketing. What is network marketing…yesterday, today, and beyond? Is it likely to change in the near future? These are all important questions to ask as more and more people are seeking a home-based business opportunity and hoping to work at home to make their dreams come true.
So what was network marketing in the past? It was a somewhat primitive version of what we now have today. You could create your own network of marketers, train them to sell, and then unleash them to make sales, so that you could earn commissions. However, there was one critical, simplifying, streamlining component missing: the Internet.

Several months ago I received a call from one of my downline distributors inquiring about a good "MLM list." Bob then asked specifically if a list of "heavy hitters" existed and how I might approach them. My response was something to the effect of "Bob, why would you want a list of people who are the least likely to want to join your opportunity?" After all, heavy hitters are people who are making huge monthly incomes (that's why they call them heavy hitters, right?). I'd assume they like making huge monthly incomes and probably would not be too interested in walking away from it and starting over from scratch.
"But Len, think about it," Bob persisted. "Just imagine if I could have recruited...". Bob then reeled off the names of three major heavy hitters, all well known throughout the industry (however, we'll just call them Mark, Jim and Ken). Bob began to fantasize about the great wealth to be had by recruiting the likes of even one of the three mega-earners he listed.

The TPLE is a great way for multilevel marketing companies to disseminate useful information about dietary supplements. While there is little guidance from the courts interpreting the boundaries of the TPLE, the FDA has sent a clear message on its position with its warning letter to Xango. The FTC has yet to directly address the issue in litigation, but by all indications, if (when) the Commission brings a case, it will closely scrutinize the relationships between the authors of third party material and the company disseminating it. If there is a material connection, the FTC will treat it as all other dietary supplement advertising cases by demanding that there be competent and reliable scientific evidence to support the claims contained in the third party material.
The warning signals from the FDA and FTC are clear. Supplement marketers are cautioned to pay close attention to these signs and conduct themselves cautiously. So far the FDA has only issued a warning letter, but if gun-slinging network marketers continue to press the limits of the TPLE, we will certainly see more stringent measures from the government. When this occurs another sequel to this article will follow, but like Ali vs. Frazier II and III, the sequels should prove more and more interesting as the stakes are raised.

When I first found out about how writing and submitting articles can greatly increase your website ranking as well as content and traffic I was very excited, but then it hit me, "What can I write about?, "I haven't written anything lengthy in years!". As a web designer and Internet entrepreneur I always believed that a flashy site design and straight to the point content was all you needed to have a successful website, boy was I wrong.

Marketing dietary supplements is tough. While we at least have the latitude to make structure - function claims in the United States, and therefore have more options than most other countries, FDA laws prevent marketers from saying what they really want to say. Let's face it, if a marketer's advertising states "Brand X antioxidant is effective in the prevention and treatment of cancer" and follows it up with tear-jerking testimonials from a cancer survivors describing how brand X gave them a new lease on life, brand X is going to sell a lot more product than the competitor who simply states in plain vanilla fashion that their antioxidant supports proper immune system function. The downside of course is that claiming that brand X treats or prevents cancer renders it a new drug and exposes brand X to enforcement action by the FDA.

People always want to know how YOU and your system can help them make money.
By showing them a "marketing 101" type of series that educates them you build credibility and can convert a better percentage of these people into business partners later.
It also helps you clean your list of a lot of unserious, tire kicking types that would otherwise just waste time.

"Eighty-five percent of distributors are losing money, 74% will fail within their fist year." Forget everything else in his report. Focus on this one statement. Read it. Say it. The Wall St. Journal reported it. USANA acknowledged it. Len Clements admitted it - that yes, Minkow was right about this.
Does the fact of these numbers shake your belief in the dream? It's a dream-buster, isn't it? Almost un-American. What do you mean, most people aren't making it? How dare you!

Postcard Marketing Success TipsPostcards may not be the most popular marketing tool in our modern high-tech business world. That's too bad because they can be a very cost-effective way to generate website traffic and sales leads ...if you do it right.
Here are 5 proven tips that will help you create powerful marketing postcards guaranteed to produce a big response.
1. Make a Big First Impression
People like getting postcards from friends and relatives. They don't like getting advertising mail. Make your postcard look at first glance like a message from a friend instead of like an advertising announcement. It creates a warm friendly reception for your postcard.
For example, use the same typestyle and layout you would use to send a postcard to a friend. Use a date at the top ...even if it is something like "Monday, 11:15 AM". And include a real "from" name at the bottom ...even if it's not handwritten.
2. Get Right to the Point
Postcards get delivered in a format that's ready to read. Take advantage of this by making the biggest benefit you offer the first thing the reader sees. This will make them want to read the rest of your postcard.
For example, state your biggest benefit as a headline at the top of your postcard ...or make it the first item on a bulleted list of benefits ...or highlight it in bold type if it's in the body of your postcard.
3. Sell the Right Thing
Marketing postcards are most effective when they are used to generate website traffic or sales leads. They are less effective for closing sales because they don't provide enough space for a detailed sales message.
Design your message to sell the reader on seeking more information instead of trying to close sales.
For example, don't include much (if any) actual information about the product or service you are selling on your postcard. Instead, promote the major benefit (or benefits) they provide. Then persuade the reader to visit your website or to take some other action to get more information from a source where you can close sales.
4. Be Clear and Direct
You have only a few seconds to get the reader's attention and to persuade them to take the action you want. So keep your message brief and make sure the reader can clearly understand it with just a quick glance.
For example, limit your postcard to just a few short sentences with blank lines between them. Reduce several sentences to a short bulleted list to save space and reading time.
Always end your postcard by telling the reader exactly what to do to get more details - and include a reason to do it immediately.
5. Stimulate Fast Action
Just telling your reader how to get more information is not enough. You have to give them a reason to respond NOW or many will put your postcard aside to do later ...then get involved with other things and forget it.
For example, offer them a discounted price, a special bonus or some other benefit if they reply to your postcard by a deadline.
Postcards are not new or high-tech. But that's not a reason to ignore them. They can generate a lot of website traffic and sales leads for a very low-cost.
Follow these 5 proven tips and you will discover how to create powerful marketing postcards guaranteed to produce a big response.

When doing due diligence on an MLM company one of the key areas is evaluation of their compensation plan. First, compare the target company plan to industry. For example, it would not be proper accounting to consider "wholesale discounts" as part of commission expense. Therefore, any comparison to industry would have to include wholesale discounts as a deduction from Gross (Retail) Sales. Why? Because no serious person doing the business would buy at retail (making Gross Sales a meaningless figure). For additional comments on discounts see the post made 10/17/06, Direct Sales Compensation and Discount Structure (Industry).

For some reason everyone wants to be mysterious about their business. If you're lowering the price nobody thinks you're doing it just because you're "such a nice guy". So let people know the reason why.
I know this probably goes against every grain of business sense, but I promise if you give people a good, believable reason why they'll respond with an open minds and more importantly, an open wallet.

Never underestimate the power of your corporate events. Most direct sales and network marketing companies share the philosophy of "building to events." This means that everything you unveil or announce at your event will take your company and your distributors through to the next event. Because events play such a major role in your overall business plan, it is important to invest time and energy into your pre-event planning. Here are some important, but often overlooked, pre-event planning elements to save you time and money on your next event:

This article will address the legal issues surrounding "door-to-door" sales in the United States.1 Lest you think that the activities of your distributors do not involve "going door-to-door," you should be aware that the federal definition (as well as most state definitions) of a "door-to-door" sale encompasses considerably more than a salesperson who merely goes from house to house and knocks on doors to make product sales. Essentially, the regulation applies to sales of goods or services of $25 or more that occur anywhere other than the seller's principle place of business. Thus, in addition to in-home solicitations, door-to-door sales also include flea markets, fairs, and other show environments. (See the Discussion section below for the Federal Trade Commission's definition.) Accordingly, direct selling distributors and the companies whose products they sell, should be aware of the requirements of federal and state "door-to-door" legislation.

Derek Harding puts E-Mail Marketing Optimization into perspective. He writes, "...in the past six months the amount of spam arriving at one of our small servers has gone from 4,000 per week to over 200,000. That's not a typo, that's a 50-fold increase in just six months to a server that's been operating for several years. Our other servers are seeing similar increases. If this rate continues, the same machine will receive over 10 million messages a week by the end of the year -- and that's just a single server. Last year, we had to drastically rework how we deal with spam because of the enormous increase in volume. While that's a dramatic amount, it isn't that unusual. Most providers have seen enormous increases in the same timeframe."
